Enjoy the International Gourmet Festival in Portugal's Algarve

The sixth annual International Gourmet Festival will be taking place in Portugal's stunning Algarve region in 2012. One of the most popular gastronomy events on the continent, the festival exclusively features Michelin-starred chefs from all Europe, there to honour the best in international cuisine. Each chef will contribute a tasting menu with wine pairings and other festivities include a golf tournament on one of the region's famous courses, cooking workshops and a Go-Kart race just for the chefs. The Vila Joya Resort will be hosting the event, which takes place from the 12th to the 22nd of January 2012.

For those looking for a place to stay while their taste buds are tempted for ten days, Premier Holidays has a beautiful collection of Algarve holiday villas, perfectly situated to attend the International Gourmet Festival. Casa Girasole is located just outside the small town of Guia, which is close to the site of the festival and also famed for its quintessential Algarvian restaurants. The beautiful villa sleeps up to seven people, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The living space is open-plan and contemporary, with a modern kitchen perfect for trying out a few of the chef's recipes from the festival. A furnished outdoor area also boasts a charcoal barbecue and the property has a luxurious private pool (with optional heating for a small fee).

Another Algarve villa, Casa Belmira would suit a smaller party, with the capacity to sleep five people (four adults and one child). This single-storey villa resides in the Quinta dos Alamos community, also close to Guia and Albufeira, and with easy access by car to Vila Joya. A water park and the Zoomarine theme park are located close by, as well as the opportunity to swim with dolphins on the coast. The kitchen is well-equipped for a self-catering holiday and an outdoor dining area provides the perfect spot for supper after a long day of golf and wine tasting.

To enjoy Michelin-starred chefs during the day and a luxurious villa by night, Monte dos Avos is the ideal choice. This newly-constructed villa is located a little way out of Albufeira in Alcantarilha, but the distance towards the festival remains fairly equal. It stands imperiously on a small hill so residents may enjoy a stunning panoramic view over the grounds, the swimming pool and the surrounding fruit trees. The villa sleeps eight people in four bedrooms and is an attractive property for a group of friends wanting to enjoy the mouthwatering feasts that the International Gourmet Festival will undoubtedly provide.

Bird-Watching Holidays In Portugal's Algarve

The Algarve in southern Portugal has long since been one of Europe's top holiday destinations. With glorious sandy beaches, year-round sunshine, golf courses and family-friendly resorts, there is something for everyone in the stunning region. There is also a growing trend for nature holidays in the Algarve, with a strong emphasis on bird-watching.

Although it may not immediately spring to mind as a prime location for the hobby, bird-watching is a growing niche in the Algarve's tourism industry, with tourists travelling from all over the world to observe hundreds of avian species. A recent Bird Watching Festival, held in Sagres, attracted around 800 people and 116 species of bird were observed, with people visiting the Algarve solely to attend the festival.

The famous Ria Formosa Natural Park is a prime location for people wanting to enjoy our feathered friends in their natural environment. Known by the locals as 'Ria', the park is visited by 200 different species of bird and is a specially protected site. Also home to flamingos, otters and the extremely localised chameleon, Ria is great for those nature lovers whose enthusiasm extends beyond birds too. It is located close to the popular Vale de Lobo resort, where Premier Holidays has a collection of beautiful Algarve villas to choose from.

The stunning Casa Nathalie sleeps 8 and is south-facing, ensuring you get to see the most wonderful sunrises and sunsets. Just a few kilometres away from amenities such as golf courses and restaurants, the privately gated villa provides the perfect mix of privacy and convenient location.

Also in the Vale de Lobo area, the truly luxurious Villa Amalia is perfect for those who want to add an air of decadence to their trip. Situated in a spectacular pine forest, the light and spacious property is at the very heart of nature, and just a short drive away from the resort of Vilamoura, where there is a marina and the opportunity for marine excursions such as dolphin spotting.

The town of Lagos is another recommended destination for keen bird-watchers, as it is just a 40 minute drive from Sagres, where the aforementioned bird-watching festival was held, and is also close to the popular bird-watching area of Paul de Lagos. With the existence of freshwater and reedbeds in the area, a number of birds are found at Paul de Lagos which may be more difficult to find in other regions. The beautiful Casa Ventana is situated just 4km outside of Lagos and is an older-style villa with fabulous views of the surrounding countryside. With the capacity to sleep 8 people, the Algarve holiday villa is perfect for those who might want a joint getaway with friends, and is also a short drive from beaches, restaurants, golf courses and the pretty resort of Luz.

Enjoy Christmas In Portugal's Algarve With Premier Holidays

A survey in 2007 by the Co-op found that 3.3million Britons were expected to spend their Christmas and festive season abroad. This year, that figure is expected to rise, with millions of holidaymakers jetting off to escape the stress associated with this time of year. Who can blame those wanting to escape the almost tragic comedy that is the office Christmas party? Or the inevitable fireworks around the dinner table when the in-laws visit on Boxing Day? The cold weather, the competition with the neighbours over who can have the most over-the-top light display, the week-long preparation for Christmas dinner... these are all factors encouraging downbeat Brits to head for warmer climes over the festive season.

Premier Holidays, a British company specialising in luxury villas, have a stunning range of Algarve holiday villas to rent throughout Portugal's beautiful southernmost tip. The Algarve is a popular tourist destination throughout the summer, but even in the slightly cooler winter months, it still boasts more sun than most resorts in Europe, making booking a villa in Algarve a great choice for those who want a change from the snow in the UK.

If you love the idea of a Christmas getaway, but don't want to forget the family values that Christmas is all about, Villa Ksenia, with it's capacity to sleep 10 people, is ideal - bring the extended family and let them enjoy the private pool and al fresco dining area. The villa is situated in the residential area of Quinta Luz, just five minutes away from the town's restaurants and twenty minutes away from the nearest sandy beach, a tennis court, a health spa and a range of shops. The interior is luxuriously furnished, with stylish leather sofas and a raised, formal dining area, perfect for your Portuguese Christmas meal.

If you'd prefer a more intimate Christmas gathering, modern Algarve Villa, Kierie is contemporary and spacious, with two bedrooms sleeping four people. Located in the highly regarded Dunas Douradas resort, Villa Kierie is well-equipped for a self-catering holiday, with a private pool and within walking distance of a lovely beach. There are restaurants and shops right on the doorstep, with additional entertainment facilities such as tennis courts and golf courses just a short drive away. Villa Kierie is perfect for a small family wishing to enjoy a secluded, private Christmas together.

For a slightly different Christmas holiday, why not gather all of your friends and jet off to Vilamoura, and the spacious Villa Oraya? As well as breathtaking views, a private pool and great access to bars, restaurants, golf courses and casinos, Villa Oraya can sleep up to 18 people, making it the ideal venue for a getaway with a large group of like-minded people who want to spend Christmas abroad. The Algarve villa has a private parking area, so car hire is an also an option if you'd like to explore the local region – the small town of Guia is just a short drive away, where the famous piri-piri chicken was first created.

Golfing Holidays In Portugal's Algarve

British Golf has enjoyed something of a renaissance lately, with Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy ranked as the top three male golfers in the world right now. Luke Donald's blistering performance in the PGA Championship 2011 earned him his status as the world's best golfer, and Lee Westwood is famed for ending Tiger Woods' reign as world number one in 2010. Young Irishman and one of golf's biggest prospects Rory McIlroy recently won the US Open, and who could forget Darren Clarke's masterful performance at the 2011 Open Championship? All of them are from the British Isles and have given Britain a sporting event to be proud of.

If you're harboring secret ambitions to join the elite club of golfers, or if you just want to play nine holes on a luxurious holiday, look no further than Premier Holidays, who provide luxury self catering Algarve villas within driving or walking distance of dozens of fantastic golf courses.

Carvoeiro is a superb location for a family-friendly holiday, with miles of sandy beaches and a great atmosphere in the quaint town centre. It is also home to the Vale de Milho golf course, an ideal course for beginners just getting the hang of the sport and for regular players to improve on their short game. The lovely Algarve Villa Cassandra is just 1.5km away from the Vale de Milho course, and is just a ten minute drive from one of the world's top 100 beaches, Praia de Marinha. The fully air-conditioned self catering villa is well-equipped and modern, with four beautifully furnished bedrooms with en suites. The 12 x 6 metre swimming pool can be electrically heated for an extra charge and the outdoor patio area is ideal for al fresco dining after a long day on the green.

Not far from Carvoerio is the lovely little town of Albufeira, with sandy coves waiting to be explored and a wealth of traditional Portuguese cafes and restaurants (one of which is where the famous 'piri piri' chicken was created). Casa Rosinhas is a four-bedroomed villa with a private pool and terrace with delightful views. There is a splash pool for small children, a large private parking area and a built-in charcoal barbecue,  an essential in a self catering Algarve villa. Casa Rosinhas is a short drive (7km) away from the nearest golf course, with many others to choose from in the area, including Pine Cliffs, Salgados and the Oceanico Academy, opened in 2009.

Premier Holidays is also proud to offer the stunning Casa Ventana in Lagos, set across two floors, with the living space positioned on the upper floor to really take advantage of the amazing views. The area is private and secluded, but the villa is just a short drive from a collection of shops and restaurants, with some superb sandy beaches and the resort of Luz. Landscaped with palm trees and fruit trees, the garden area has a 10 x 5 metre swimming pool and an al fresco dining area, perfect for balmy summer evenings after a day on the golf course. In the area of Lagos is the fantastic 27-hole course Palmares. Transformed by American golf course designer Robert Trent Jones Jr, the views from the course over the Bay of Lagos are breathtaking and with five of the holes placed on sand dunes, it can be a real challenge for any golfing enthusiast.

Tempt Your Taste Buds With A Wine-Tasting Holiday In Portugal's Algarve

Sir Cliff Richard, veteran singer with over 260 million records sold over a 53-year career, is celebrating after winning 5 awards – but not for his musical talents. The worldwide star has received a quintet of prestigious awards at a Portuguese wine competition, judged by Michelin-starred sommeliers and wine critics from all over the world.

Sir Cliff, who owns the 24 hectare Adega do Cantor, has been heavily involved in creating his own wine in Portugal for several years and his hands-on approach (he can often be seen getting his hands dirty in the vineyards themselves) has now paid off. Joining his seemingly endless list of musical awards and accolades are his new wine awards, including Best Red for the Region (2009 Onda Nova Alicante), and two gold medals for his Onda Nova Verdelho 2010 and Vida Nova Rose 2010.

The stunning estate, sometimes nicknamed 'Cellar Of The Singer', is situated in Faro, the southernmost district of Portugal, in an area called Albufeira. The gorgeous region is home to some of the world's finest coastlines, with both lively beach resorts and sleepy villages alike.

If a wine-tasting holiday in a stunning location sounds appealing, an Algarve holiday villa from Premier Holidays could be perfect for you. Premier Holidays has a number of stunning self-catering Algarve villas, close to a number of vineyards, including Sir Cliff's, for a holiday with a real difference.

The beautiful Villa Alamo sleeps 7 people (6 adults, 1 child), is air-conditioned and has a private optional heated pool. A patio provides an idyllic setting for al fresco dining and the kitchen is modern and well-equipped for a self-catering holiday. It is located near the charming village of Guia, near Albufeira, and home to many traditional Portuguese bars and restaurants, one of which is where the famous 'piri-piri chicken' was created.

Also located in Guia is the Casa Rosinhas, a luxurious 4-bedroomed Premier Holidays villa, with a master suite occupying the entire upper floor of the property. The master suite has a private terrace with gorgeous vistas and a bathroom with a large corner bath and hydro-massage shower, making this lovely villa the perfect location for a decadent wine-tasting getaway.

As well as the Adega do Cantor estate to explore and sample, there is also the Quinta dos Vales project, a 20-minute drive away. Quinta dos Vales is a unique project, with a winemaking centre, a small animal farm and a centre for arts and events all rolled into one. If you're planning on bringing the family, there is an aquatic theme park (Zoomarine), with rides and various attractions, and there is a dolphin interaction programme for a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

There’s Still Time For Late Summer Savers In An Algarve Self-Catering Villa

If you haven’t yet taken your summer holiday, a late break in September could see you saving as much as 92% on peak break prices according to new research by Santander.
The high street bank found that those who plan a trip to coincide with the school holidays may end up spending 92% more than those who go after the end of August. For those who have yet to plan a holiday, these savings could be just the incentive needed to book a late availability Algarve holiday villa and jet off for a late summer break in the sun.
Blisteringly hot in August, the Algarve also remains warm and sunny throughout September, so there’s no need to compromise on beach or pool time if you go away later in the year than would normally be the case.
With the cheaper cost of a September break compared with an August summer holiday, why not splash out on a larger property and holiday in style? Premier Holidays, specialists in self catering Algarve holiday villas and apartments, have a number of luxury Algarve villas in popular resorts to choose from. Ideal for larger families and groups of friends, amenities such as private pools and spacious outdoor areas make a September trip just as memorable and enjoyable as an August break.
While it may be a few degrees cooler towards the middle and end of September, the pleasant climate means it’s possible to enjoy a great round of golf or days sightseeing without having to battle uncomfortably high temperatures. For those travelling with young children and older family members, the lower temperatures make the experience that much more enjoyable.

Jet ToThe Algarve from Ireland For Some of Europe’s Best Golfing

Irish golfers keen to emulate the back to back US open success of  Northern Ireland golfers Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy will now find it a lot easier to log in extra hours on the course with a new daily route from Belfast to Faro. The Algarve city is a gateway to golfer’s paradise and just a short drive from a number of world class courses with almost guaranteed year round sunshine.
While Belfast shivers in snow, wind and rain for much of the winter, the temperate climate of the Algarve makes for excellent golfing facilities and sun drenched rounds are possible even in the depths of December or January.
Wrapping itself around the stunning coastline of southern Portugal, the Algarve’s 30+ courses are not just sun traps but idyllic destinations in their own right. With dramatic landscaping, beautiful sea views and excellent facilities, it’s no surprise the region plays hosts to a number of international and European championships.
Of course, with legendary courses such as Valderama to visit during any golf holiday, picking a suitable base is essential to really making the most of the trip. A self-catering Algarve villa is a flexible and practical option, particularly for groups of golfers travelling together.   Cheaper than a hotel but with all of the comforts of a luxury stay, a large Algarve villa – say four or five bedrooms- can comfortably accommodate groups of eight or more. Choose one with a private pool and outdoor space and post-golf rest and relaxation takes care of itself.
The popular resort of Vale do Lobo combines the facilities you’d expect in a holiday resort such as a gorgeous beach, great bars and choice of local fish restaurants with a convenient central location just a stone’s through from a wide selection of golf courses.
Premier Holidays, Algarve villa specialists, have recently extended their already ample portfolio in the Algarve. Fifty new properties have been added, giving more than 130 villas and apartments to choose from. Ian Fox from Premier Holidays said, “Golfers wanting to spend every spare minute on the course should pick a villa on a purpose built resort – any of our Quinta do Lago villas for example enjoy views of the fairways. Built around 72 holes of world class golf, guests are literally spoilt for choice and have very little distance to travel to find a challenging course and excellent training facilities.
“Vale do Lobo is also a safe choice with a choice of villas or townhouses to stay in, situated next to what is possibly one of the most photographed golf courses in the world. One of our most popular Vale do Lobo villas is Casa Potes, a stunning 5 bedroom, 5 bathroom villa with outdoor heated pool, large terrace, games rooms and jacuzzis.”

Try a Self-Catering Algarve Villa For a Fun-Filled Holiday

Just announced as one of low cost airline, EasyJet’s top five summer destinations, the Algarve is the perfect spot for family holidays and last minute escapes. Catering to high expectations but rooted in an affordable pricing structure, Premier Holidays offers an array of family-sized, Algarve holiday villas situated along a stunning coastline of beautiful beaches in the popular Portuguese holiday resort. Just half an hour from Faro airport, the resorts of Vale do Lobo and Quinta dos Alamos offer large, spacious villas ideal for families on a budget.
Ian Fox from Premier Holiday’s said, “While the many high-profile resorts dotted around the region offer plenty of sea, sun, shopping and a spot of scuba diving, there is more to the Algarve than meets the eye. Rest and relaxation may be at the top of the agenda on a family holiday but Algarve is home to so much more you’ll be raring  to get off your sun bed and go off and explore.”
Travelling with children of any age can seem like a daunting task as it can be difficult to find suitable family activities that everyone can join in with. With Premier-Holidays’ current line-up of great value Algarve villas, there are plenty of places to stay within easy walking distance of the beach and other attractions. Most Algarve holiday villas available for this summer are just a short drive from the historical and charming towns of Faro, Lagos and Albuferia, all of which make for perfect family outings.
If you’re hoping to soak up a bit of history and culture as well as sun and sand, the  historical town centre of Faro is a mere 20 to 30 minutes away from resorts like Vale do Lobo and Quinta dos Alamos. A maze of small winding streets, cafés and bars, taking a morning, afternoon or even an evening to wander around and enjoy the atmosphere is a worthwhile break from the beach. The Cathedral, the Igreja Do Carmino, the Faro Francis Fountain, Civil Government building, the City Hall and the Marina are just a few of Faro’s must see attractions.
An oasis of fun, the nearby Aqua parks Aqualand, Slide and Splash and Aquashow offer something for both young and old. Even water babies have their own areas in which to safely splash and play.
Options for family entertainment also include the ZooMarine complete with marine centre, zoo, amusement park and a dolphin show. Krazy World & Algarve Zoo north of Albufeira is also home to both a zoo and children’s theme park should the little ones get bored of building sandcastles.
Hoping for that extra special something to surprise the kids? Lots of dolphin watching trips set sail from Lagos, Portimaro, Alvor Harbour and Albufeira. Alternatively, an adventure jeep safari promises to keep children and adults alike equally entertained.
Making the search for self catered accommodation easy, Premier Holidays provide a range of attractive Algarve villas with private pools and modern comfortable furnishings. Villa Verandah, in the Vale do Lobos resort is within easy walking distance from the beach, sleeps as many as eight and with prices starting from £817 is great value for large families.
If you need something a little smaller, Villa Madalena is equally stunning, accommodates six and is located in the exclusive resort of Dunas Douradas.
Situated close to some of the water attractions and the Zoomarine theme park is Casa Belmira. An attractive property, this Algarve villa in the resort of Quinta dos Alamos is perfectly in situe for family days out or a trip to the bustling town of Albufeira. It’s also just a 15 minute drive from the beautiful beach of Gale.

Why Staycation When You Can Spend Less By Choosing A Self Catering Algarve Villa Holiday?

Recent research carried out by a UK hotelier cast a rather gloomy cloud over the British summer with the news that 35% of Brits felt that a ‘staycation’ was on the cards thanks to money worries and concerns over the cost of going abroad for a seasonal break. Fortunately, self-catering villa specialists Premier Holidays are giving hope to the millions who had resigned themselves to a rainy few days in the British Isles with assurances that a self catering villa in the Algarve may in fact be a much cheaper alternative.

Ian Fox from Premier Holidays said, “It’s a myth that holidaying in the UK can only be cheaper than an overseas break. With the cost of fuel high, travelling to a destination such as the South Coast from the north of England can run into the hundreds of pounds alone, without factoring in accommodation, entertainment on rainy days and the cost of food and drink.

“In comparison, many airlines posted poor passenger figures last summer as lots of people opted to stay at home and save money rather than go on holiday. This means there are lots of great deals to be had this year to entice holidaymakers back into the air and overseas for their annual getaway.”

Opting to stay in the UK and travel to a British resort for a week or two this summer also makes it difficult to make any savings on the cost of living. Even self-catering can be expensive as it’s still necessary to buy food and drink at just the same sort of costs – if not higher- as doing the weekly shop in a local supermarket. Travel abroad though and the cost of living is much cheaper, allowing savings on the cost of feeding a family for a week that can then go towards flights, spending money and souvenirs.

The annual Post Office service released this week found an Algarve Villa holiday to be one of the top two European holiday destinations for 2011 when it came to value for money and the cost of food and drink. The total price of 16 everyday essentials including milk, eggs, bread, water and vegetables was just £44.36 in the Algarve compared with £63.63 in Brighton. These savings make it much more affordable to find a cheap flight and book a luxury Algarve villa than jump in the car and head to a resort such as Brighton, Torquay or St Ives.

Mr Fox added, “The Algarve has been named by the Post Office for a number of years running in their annual report as one of the cheapest places in Europe for a holiday, definitely cheaper than Britain as the cost of the standard basket of goods showed and also notably cheaper than places like Cyprus and the Greek Islands. With so many great deals on flights and on other essentials like car hire, it’s possible to enjoy a hot sunny week in Portugal for a much lower total cost than a week in the UK.”

With almost guaranteed sunshine, an Algarve villa with a pool is a must and choosing one close to the beach also means there’s less to spend on attractions and days out as the whole family can just head to the beach. Popular resorts such as Vale do Lobo represent good value for money – larger properties are plentiful so you can even rent a large, luxurious accommodation with five or six bedrooms and split the cost with extended family or friends. Villa Prado, a spacious and attractive four bedroom villa in Quinta dos Alamos in the heart of the Algarve costs as little as £81 per person.

Where Are The Best Beaches In The Algarve?

The Algarve, Portugal, is a highly popular holiday region that has huge numbers of visitors flocking to it each year from every corner of the globe, and it's not difficult to see why. For all its fascinating history and picturesque scenery, if there's one thing that the beautiful Algarve is definitely renowned for, it’s the amazing beaches that can be found here. Here, we round up a selection of the best of them for those who are interested in Algarve holiday villas.

Praia da Marinha, Lagoa

The Praia da Marinha beach is situated near Lagoa and is renowned for its rocky outcrops and calm waters. Although neither the largest nor the most remote beach in the Algarve, it is nonetheless the quintessential Portuguese cove, and a great place to come from your Algarve holiday villa if you’re seeking an escape from the tourist throng. It has calm waters that make it a great place to go snorkelling or enjoy a boat trip to the nearby caves. It is less recommended for families with young children, however, due to the steep steps that need to be negotiated to reach it.

This beach’s spirit of seclusion extends to the local amenities, with a mere modestly sized wooden bar-restaurant to be found near the steps – meaning that you are well advised to bring a picnic and your own water.

Praia Da Rocha, Portimão
Portimão is the Algarve’s second city after Faro, so it should be no surprise that it also happens to boast one of the most bustling and best known beaches in the region. Located just south of the town, this beach has expanded considerably in width in recent years as more and more holidaymakers have flocked here, with Portimão itself also having developed into a complete resort. The beach itself is family-friendly and close to a wide range of amenities on the well-developed seafront, making it a great place to check out on your journey from your Algarve villa.
Ilha da Barreta, Faro

Hardcore sun worshippers will particularly love this pristine 10km long beach, which is also one of the most remote to be found anywhere in the region, despite being accessible a mere boat ride away from the happening city of Faro. The beach is surrounded by marshland and the area is also home to many birds, including terns and flamingoes, meaning that it is also a very popular beach with nature lovers. Speaking of nature, it’s also something of an unofficial naturist spot.

Other than during the summer season there are seriously few people to be found here, although a restaurant and toilets are nearby. But for those interested in Algarve holiday villas designed for serious relaxation, or even snorkelling in the nearby waters, there are few better beaches around.
Praia Ilha De Tavira, Faro
Another popular beach for those with naturist inclinations (or at least, an especially reserved area), this is one of the most highly rated beaches on the eastern side of Faro, and is also a big hit with water sports enthusiasts. This elongated sandbar beach is accessible by boat from the jetty of Tavira.

Praia da Bordeira, Carrapateira

This is certainly an impressive looking beach, with its mighty sand dunes and rugged cliffs of limestone, and it offers plenty of sand, too, stretching for three kilometres. Its exposed location and often considerable wind make it especially popular with surfers and anybody else who appreciates a rugged beach experience.

Despite the stunning scenery, this beach is not frequently visited, although it is close to the Praia do Amado beach, which with its surfing and bodyboarding schools, does see slightly more visitors from villas in the Algarve. Phoenicians,Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians

Resort in Focus: Carvoeiro

If you’re looking for an Algarve destination with a difference, Carvoeiro is a great resort to visit from any of a wide range of Algarve villas, making finding accommodation easy and the experience unique. A civil parish in the Lagoa Municipality, Carvoeiro is about 5km south of Lagoa city, but has no shortage of attractions of its own. It is a picturesque fishing village that, having been described by a foreign visitor in 1965 as a place where “the mode of living remains essentially medieval”, has now grown to become the main tourist area of the municipality.
Carvoeiro Algarve villas give you access to many of the same selling points of resorts elsewhere in the Algarve, such as highly picturesque scenery, an excellent sandy beach and a climate that produces average maximum temperatures of 28 degrees Celsius in July and August.
Of particular interest to visitors, however, will be the many family friendly activities in the area. The pretty Carvoeiro Beach, for example, is located in a sheltered sandy cove and is an excellent place to relax in the sun or swim in the sea. For a change of scenery or for even greater seclusion, pay a visit to some of the nearby beaches such as Marinha, Carvalho and Benagil.
Once you’ve tired of all that, before heading back to your Algarve holiday villa, how about a visit to the area’s theme parks? There are some excellent water parks in the area that will be of delight to both children and adults. These include the thrilling Slide and Splash water park and Zoomarine, the latter actually allowing you to swim with dolphins.
There’s plenty more going on in and around Carvoeiro than just that, however. If you like the idea of taking a break in Carvoeiro at this time of year as the weather heats up, you may be interested in the many concerts, sports tournaments and ferias that are taking place locally. How about the concert by the Orquestra do Algarve in nearby Lagoa Auditorium on 14th May? or the Festa da Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, which takes place in Carvoeiro on the last Sunday of every August?
To enjoy all of these events and more, you’ll need to find a local villa. The three-bedroom Casa Alaris is set just a few minutes’ drive away from the centre of Carvoeiro in the popular Vale de Milho community, and features secluded pools, terraces and outdoor dining areas with built-in barbecues. Its first floor terrace also allows for lovely country views. It’s simply the perfect place to base a Carvoeiro holiday.
For those who need a greater amount of space, other great Carvoeiro and Algarve villas include Casa Francesca. This beautiful family villa sleeps 11 people across its five bedrooms, and is mere walking distance away from the shops, restaurants and bars in Monte Carvoeiro, which is itself just a few minutes from Carvoeiro centre. Or how about booking the superior and modern Villa Oliveiras? This villa, just 2.5km from Carvoeiro centre, is very spacious and attractive and features sea views and a private optional heated pool.

Area in Focus: The Eastern Countryside

The Algarve’s Eastern Countryside is the perfect place to visit for your next holiday, as it offers a slow and unhurried pace of life. There’s a good reason for this: it’s simply much less well known than the West with its assortment of tourist resorts and Algarve villas. Shorn of the Western part of the Algarve’s mass tourism developments, the Eastern Countryside offers a wide range of delights.
The Algarve’s countryside is full of secluded villages that have been untouched for centuries. If you want to sample some of this preserved history, then why not start your trip around the area at the pretty fishing town of Tavira? With its whitewashed houses adorned with decorative chimneys and pyramid shaped Roman-tiled roofs nestled amongst orange, fig and almond trees, Tavira can trace its history as far back as around 2,000 BC. It also has a Moorish Castle, as well as many fine 18th century buildings dating from the period after the devastating earthquake of 1755.
Other must-see stopping points as you journey around the Eastern Countryside from your Quinta dos Alamos villa include the historically important town of Castro Marim. Situated near the banks of the Guadiana and in close proximity to the coast, the remains of the first settlements in the area date as far back as about 5,000BC, and for many thousands of years it was a port that offered shelter to the ships that sailed the Guadiana collecting metals and other wares from Alcoutim. Attractions to see now include the town castle’s 10th to 12th century remains and the 17th century fort of São Sebastião.
Nonetheless, if there’s one reason you choose to come to the Algarve’s Eastern Countryside, it is naturally to get close to nature, so it makes sense to look out for the countryside’s most notable flora or fauna whilst out and about. A typical Loule Algarve villa will give direct access to the stunning scenery while also offering plenty of space to relax and enjoy the sun.
The Algarve has an amazing variety of wild flowers that make for a changing landscape the whole year round. Discover the yellow ‘Bermuda buttercups’ on the cliffs and in the fields at the start of the year, which give way to giant fennel plants as the months pass. The Eastern Countryside is also a paradise for bird spotters, offering another great way to get back to nature. Or why not explore the cork plantations or sample the fine brandy made from locally grown fruit?
Despite its secluded position and undiscovered feel, there is a huge choice of Algarve holiday villas to be found in or around the Eastern Countryside. Villa Mateus is a four bedroom villa just a ten minute drive from the beautiful town of Loule, sleeps eight and also comes with air conditioning and a private pool. Set in 1700 square metres of lush, sub-tropical gardens, this villa also offers truly spectacular countryside views.
The Villa Adriano, meanwhile, is another charming Algarve villa ten minutes’ drive from Loule boasting unbeatable panoramic views. With its six bedrooms and private pool, it is also just a short drive away from the charming town of Almancil and its famously superb restaurants.
Alternatively, look out for Quinta dos Alamos villas such as Villa Alamo. This is a beautiful two-storey property, has three bedrooms and sleeps seven. It has a private optional heated pool and is not only situated in the desirable area of Quinta dos Alamos but is also in close vicinity to the charming village of Guia with its traditional restaurants and cafes.

Resort in Focus: Lagos and area

There are few holiday destinations that offer quite as exceptional a variety of attractions and things to do as Lagos in the Algarve. Lagos is situated 10 miles west of Portimao and 50 miles west of Faro, on Portugal’s south west coast. Holidays in Lagos give you the opportunity to enjoy the best of everything in a sun-drenched holiday, from charming market town architecture and seaport to the vibrant beach. Lagos is one of the most ancient towns in the Algarve, consisting of a fishing harbour surrounded by crumbling walls, on a gorgeous wide bay.
So, what are the best things to see and do in Lagos for those staying in Algarve holiday villas? Well, there are certainly plenty of great beaches, meaning that there is something for every kind of holidaymaker. You may for example want to relax in a more secluded spot, in which case you’re sure to love the intimate slither of sand at Praia de Dona Ana, complete with its little grottos and coves. If you’re more interested in joining the tourist throng, though, you can head to the two-mile long beach at Meia Praia, which is a great spot for windsurfing and jet-skiing and is the longest beach in the Algarve.
Lagos also offers a great nightlife, with trendy bars, pavement cafes, late night jazz bars and nightclubs. There is something to suit everyone here, though, including an exciting range of first class restaurants that serve both traditional and international dishes. There are also some great seafood restaurants to be found around the harbour.
Lagos is great for more active holidaymakers, too. You can do everything here from playing tennis and going scuba diving to sailing or horse riding. There are also many top class golf courses in the area, offering both great weather and spectacular views.
But regardless of how long you spend in Lagos, don’t miss out on the opportunity to enjoy the region’s folklore – Algarve is a great choice for a variety of dances and festivals, particularly if you head into the Serra hills during summertime feasts and saints days.
So, what are the best villas to be found in and around Lagos for a variety of party sizes? The Vale do Lobo villas from Premier Holidays include Villa Filomena, which is a fabulous purpose built accommodation that is contemporary and stylish whilst also offering a high level of comfort. Beachside dining and entertainment, shopping, tennis and golf are all close at hand.
The best Quinta dos Alamos villas, meanwhile, include Casa Prado. This four bedroom villa has a gated private swimming pool. Slightly smaller villas in the area include the three-bedroom Villa Alamo, which sleeps six adults and one child.
